The Sulfur Solution Changing Global Agriculture

Canadian firm Sulvaris’ MST fertilizer boosts crop yields and reduces runoff in push for sustainable farming

Sulvaris, a Canadian fertilizer technology company, has received international recognition for its Micronized Sulphur Technology (MST), a formulation designed to improve crop yields while cutting nutrient waste.

On March 18, 2025, the company was awarded the 2025 Science Innovation Award by the International Fertilizer Association, a milestone that highlights MST’s growing influence in sustainable agriculture.

Sulfur, long considered a secondary nutrient, has become increasingly important as soil deposits have declined following air quality improvements. Sulvaris’ MST process refines sulfur into ultra-fine particles that plants can absorb more efficiently than conventional fertilizers. The result, the company says, is higher productivity with reduced input use.

“MST gives growers exactly what they need, when they need it,” said a Sulvaris spokesperson. “It’s precision agriculture in action, and the field results speak for themselves.”

Sulvaris has partnered with Nutrien, one of the world’s largest agricultural suppliers, to distribute MST through its Smart Nutrition™ MAP+MST® products. The collaboration aims to make the patented technology available to more farmers and support efforts to improve fertilizer efficiency.

The company also signed a memorandum of understanding in November 2024 with the Netherlands-based engineering firm Machinefabriek Kreber to co-develop prilled urea MST, expanding the technology’s potential use in nitrogen fertilizers.

Analysts say MST reflects a wider shift in global farming towards nutrient systems that balance productivity and environmental goals. By reducing runoff and the total amount of fertilizer required per acre, MST aligns with agricultural policies seeking to curb emissions and soil pollution.

As Sulvaris scales up international deployment, the company’s technology is emerging as part of a broader effort to make farming more resource-efficient. For an industry under pressure to meet rising food demand with fewer environmental impacts, sulfur’s renewed role marks a notable turn in fertilizer development.
